Lower West Side

Many Communities, One Neighborhood: A Redevelopment Plan for the Lower West Side

This historic neighborhood is deeply imbedded into the urban fabric of Buffalo. Niagara Street, which runs down the center of the LWS, is part of the original radial street pattern of the City, beginning Downtown at Niagara Square, just a short distance down Niagara Street to the east.

With support in the implementation by resident action groups led by Hispanics United of Buffalo (HUB) and Heart of the City Neighborhoods, the recommendations of this report can be successfully implemented. Various strategies attacking problems of vacant parcels and storefronts, poor structural conditions and an underutilized and sterile commercial corridor, while servicing the needs of and fostering a sense of community, will yield positive change. A culturally rich and vibrant future for the Lower West Side community can be achieved. With the continued teamwork and cooperation between each and every one of the residents and the planning team, the full potential of the community will be realized, now and in the years to come.
